Cold Cutting of Fuel Tank

Project Details

Category
  • Cold Cutting

Hitech Industrial Services were required to cut an access point into a buried unleaded fuel tank for decommissioning at a repair yard in Smithfield NSW. Hitech utilised the Cold Cutting process, which uses ultra high pressure water and garnet to ensure precision and safe cutting of the steel tank without any explosions.

Conventional methods of steel cutting could not be used because of the presence of ‘hot works’. Due to petrol being highly flammable and extremely dangerous, there is an immediate danger when working with the substance. Cold Cutting is the only method of steel cutting which does not use open flames or ‘hot works’, eliminating the risk of potential explosion.

Hitech also used chemical masks and exclusion zones to ensure no ignition of toxic fumes and the quality of air for the workers attending to the job.
